The Baltic capitals Vilnius, Tallinn and Riga, sandy dunes of the Curonian spit and Jagala waterfall, Peipus lake and abandoned nuclear missile base – our All Baltics tours brings You to dozens of points of interest. We would like to, but we cannot include all of them!
Today’s post is about what You miss: The Church of John the Baptist in Zapiškis. This gothic gem was erected in the late 16th century on the bank of the Neman river.
It is really strange to see a church in the middle of a green field. Usually a church marks the center of a town, and is surrounded by houses, often adjacent to the market square.
This church once also stood on a street. But almost every spring the high water of Neman destroyed the buildings on the river bank. The last were demolished by ice and water during 1946 high water, and only the church survived. The town was rebuilt several hundred meters away from the river.
Today the church and plaza around it are used for concerts and cultural events.
